At the prescribed hour, Reggi and Madison make their way to Benny’s unit. Reggi’s put on a flowing white blouse over cream shorts. She had dyed her hair black and done away with the wig days ago, as has Madison, to more closely match their new identities. Madison likes to wear denim shorts with a colorful blouse tied into a bow at her waist, in fitting with her petite figure.

They approach Benny’s door and find it slightly ajar. Knocking on the door and calling out to him, the door swings open to reveal the bachelor-pad of Benny the building-super. They stop after taking a few steps inside and take in the contents of the living room. Things are thrown on the floor, a coffee table decoration is smashed and broken, framed pictures on the wall are tilted aimlessly

The girls look at each other, reading each other’s mind, I don’t have a good feeling about this. Madison grabs her grandmother’s hand and starts for the door, to take her out of harm's way. Before they hurriedly reach it, they hear what sounds like a man’s voice, a moan, a cry for help. It sounds very weak, and despite the natural urge to save themselves, to leave this place, they stop. Someone inside here, in the bedroom, they think, needs help. It might be Benny. He might be dying.

Reggi looks at Madison and whispers, “Benny is hurt, Madison. We can’t just leave.”

“And, what if the person that did this is still here? Are you going to protect me?” Madison hisses back, under her breath.

Defiantly, Reggi says, as quietly as possible, “I’m going to the kitchen. To get a knife.”

Madison rolls her eyes and follows her lead. They take their flats and flip-flops off, and make their way to the kitchen, their bare feet masking them. They spot a knife block, and each removes one as quietly as possible. Madison’s is a little paring knife, and she almost exhales disappointedly.

They make their way down the short hall to the bedroom, passing a bathroom along the way, carefully inspecting it to ensure no one is behind the door. Carefully, purposely, and beginning to shake a little, they continue on slowly, one step, two steps. When they find themselves at the entrance to Benny’s bedroom, he’s seen face down on the floor, his arms and legs outstretched. He appears motionless in the dark recesses of his bedroom, unmoving, corpselike. The girls stare in disbelief, and they approach slowly, holding their knives stiffly out in front of them. Step by step, breathless, staring at the body on the floor, their breaths quickening. Their eyes wide, horror crossing their faces.

As they become closer and closer, almost standing over him, he suddenly turns over and, seeing the shadowed figures holding knives, begins to scream and scream and scream. He’s wild with terror. It ignites the same terror in the girls as they begin to scream hysterically with him, their arms shaking, jumping up and down, the tension building more and more as all three of them look left and right, screaming loudly and terrified.
